Calculate round-trip fuel cost

Result will appear here.

What this calculator tells you

This page estimates round-trip fuel only. A realistic travel budget may also need tolls, parking, lodging, meals, charging stops, local driving and a contingency amount.

Formula

Round-trip fuel cost = ((One-way distance × 2) ÷ Fuel economy) × Fuel price

Worked example

A 350 km one-way trip at 12 km/L and 1.70 per liter is 700 km round trip and costs about 99.17 in fuel.

Useful for

  • Estimating fuel before a road trip
  • Comparing driving with another transport option
  • Testing a route using different fuel prices or efficiency assumptions

Common mistakes

  • Entering the total round-trip distance in the one-way field and doubling it again.
  • Ignoring local driving at the destination.
  • Comparing only fuel cost when another option includes or avoids parking, tolls or lodging.

How to get a more useful estimate

Use inputs that match the decision you are actually making. If a price, rate, efficiency or usage figure can vary, run the calculator more than once with a low, expected and high case. Keep units consistent, avoid rounding intermediate values too early, and separate costs that this calculator does not include.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter one-way or total distance?

Enter one-way distance. The calculator doubles it for a round trip.

Does it include tolls?

No. Add tolls and other travel costs separately.

Can I use this for a one-way trip?

You can use the fuel-cost calculator instead, which does not automatically double the distance.
