Calculate fuel cost

Result will appear here.

What this calculator tells you

The result uses the efficiency and fuel price you enter. Real consumption can vary with traffic, weather, speed, load, tires, driving style and route.

Formula

Fuel cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel economy) × Fuel price per unit

Worked example

At 500 km, 12 km/L and a fuel price of 1.70 per liter, estimated fuel use is about 41.67 liters and estimated fuel cost is about 70.83.

Useful for

  • Planning the fuel cost of a regular drive
  • Comparing two vehicles using realistic efficiency figures
  • Testing how a change in fuel price affects a monthly or trip budget

Common mistakes

  • Mixing miles per gallon with kilometers per liter.
  • Using an official test-cycle figure when your own real-world efficiency is very different.
  • Forgetting that idling, detours and extra local driving add distance.

How to get a more useful estimate

Use inputs that match the decision you are actually making. If a price, rate, efficiency or usage figure can vary, run the calculator more than once with a low, expected and high case. Keep units consistent, avoid rounding intermediate values too early, and separate costs that this calculator does not include.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use miles instead of kilometers?

Yes if all units are consistent. Pair your distance unit with a compatible fuel-economy input and fuel price.

Why is my real fuel cost different?

Actual efficiency varies with driving conditions and vehicle use.

Does this include maintenance or tolls?

No. This page estimates fuel cost only.
