Calculate percentage of a number

Result will appear here.

What this calculator tells you

The result is the portion of the original number represented by the percentage you entered. The calculator does not add or subtract that portion automatically; it simply finds the percentage amount.

Formula

Result = Number × (Percentage ÷ 100)

Worked example

For 20% of 150, convert 20% to 0.20 and multiply: 150 × 0.20 = 30.

Useful for

  • Finding a sale discount amount before checking the final price
  • Estimating a percentage-based fee, commission, allocation or contribution
  • Checking how much of a total belongs to a category

Common mistakes

  • Entering 0.20 when you mean 20%. Enter 20 in the percentage field.
  • Confusing “20% of 150” with “150 increased by 20%.” Those are different calculations.
  • Rounding too early when the result will be used in another calculation.

How to get a more useful estimate

Use inputs that match the decision you are actually making. If a price, rate, efficiency or usage figure can vary, run the calculator more than once with a low, expected and high case. Keep units consistent, avoid rounding intermediate values too early, and separate costs that this calculator does not include.
