Electricity Cost Calculator

Estimate electricity cost from energy use and your local rate. Enter your own local prices, rates and units where applicable.

Calculate electricity cost

Result will appear here.

What this calculator tells you

Electric utility bills can include fixed charges, tiered rates, taxes, time-of-use pricing or other adjustments. Use an effective per-kWh rate when you want the estimate to better resemble your bill.

Formula

Electricity cost = Energy use in kWh × Price per kWh

Worked example

If you use 300 kWh and your effective price is 0.20 per kWh, the simple energy-cost estimate is 60.

Useful for

  • Estimating the variable energy portion of a bill
  • Comparing two electricity-rate assumptions
  • Checking the effect of reducing monthly kWh usage

Common mistakes

  • Using watts instead of kilowatt-hours.
  • Ignoring fixed charges when comparing the estimate with a full utility bill.
  • Assuming a single flat rate when your tariff changes by tier or time of day.

How to get a more useful estimate

Use inputs that match the decision you are actually making. If a price, rate, efficiency or usage figure can vary, run the calculator more than once with a low, expected and high case. Keep units consistent, avoid rounding intermediate values too early, and separate costs that this calculator does not include.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kWh?

A kilowatt-hour is a unit of energy. For example, a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour uses about 1 kWh.

Why is this lower than my actual bill?

Your bill may include fixed charges, taxes or variable tariffs not represented here.

Can I use an average bill rate?

Yes. Dividing a bill’s applicable energy charges by kWh can provide a practical effective rate for rough planning.
