What this calculator tells you

The three-field structure is intentionally simple. Adapt each bucket to your move and include costs that are easy to forget, such as utility setup, cleaning, temporary storage, travel or first-week essentials.

Formula

Moving budget = Transport or movers + Deposits/setup + Supplies/buffer

Worked example

Using 800 for transport, 1,200 for deposits and setup, and 500 for supplies and buffer gives a planning total of 2,500.

Useful for

  • Setting a cash target before moving
  • Comparing a self-move with professional movers
  • Separating refundable deposits from true moving expenses in your own notes

Common mistakes

  • Budgeting only for the mover or truck.
  • Forgetting overlapping rent, deposits or setup charges.
  • Using the entire contingency buffer for planned purchases before the move happens.

How to get a more useful estimate

Use inputs that match the decision you are actually making. If a price, rate, efficiency or usage figure can vary, run the calculator more than once with a low, expected and high case. Keep units consistent, avoid rounding intermediate values too early, and separate costs that this calculator does not include.

Frequently asked questions

What belongs in deposits and setup?

Examples include deposits, connection charges and other upfront setup costs relevant to your move.

How large should the buffer be?

There is no universal amount. Base it on the uncertainty and complexity of your move.

Does the result separate refundable deposits?

No. The calculator adds all entered amounts. Track refundable items separately if that distinction matters to you.
